ACES WEEKLY Volume 16, Week Six.

This week our tribute to Herb Trimpe comes from Ace creator, Lew Stringer.

The first time I saw the work of Herb Trimpe was on the cover of Incredible Hulk No.115, May 1969. I was ten years old but I still remember the impact it had on me, seeing that striking visual of the Leader's face staring out from the shelf of my corner shop. This was back in the days when American comics were distributed to British newsagents, priced at a shilling each. ( Five pence in decimal for younger readers.)  After rushing home with the comic, I eagerly read it and instantly became a fan of Herb's clean, dynamic artwork. A new artist on one of my favourite Marvel characters. In the Sixties, distribution of US comics wasn't reliable in the UK but I made the effort to find and buy Incredible Hulk as often as I could if it featured Herb Trimpe. I was disappointed I couldn't track down Herb's Phantom Eagle, but I bought it years later after discovering the delights of comics speciality stores.  For me, Herb Trimpe's work had the magic ingredients of superhero comics: clarity, excitement, dynamism, and good entertainment. Rest In Peace, Herb, you'll never be forgotten.
