ACES WEEKLY Volume 15, Week Four!
There's nothing so powerful as a simple drawing... At Aces Weekly, as you know, we have these great things called sketchcards, which give access to our volumes for those who visit us at events, and which our Aces add fine but simple drawings to. These cards are very small and so thus are the drawings - but what always surprises me, though it shouldn't, is the great power they have in attracting attention. I'm always extra glad to see this reaction, because in the branch of comic art I've been largely occupied in - the mainstream comics industry - drawings are done by the ton, and at an appropriately industrial speed, which often results in the loss of the spontaneity and attractiveness that's always the mark of the alluring decorations our Aces regularly pull out of the hat for our sketchcards. And it's that power of the simple drawing that will always be our trump card in the contest between comics storytelling and the telling of tales by other means, because as well as being the foundation of all comics craft, it's the very basis of language itself, as well as being hard-wired into all our brains - which is why all of us growing up draw as soon as we can find something to do it with - whatever we end up doing further down the line... : )
